Torah Portion 19: Terumah – The Home We Build Together
“이스라엘 자손에게 명령하여 내게 예물을 가져오라 하고 기쁜 마음으로 내는 자가 내게 바치는 모든 것을 너희는 받을지니라” (출 25:2) “Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering. You are to receive the offering for me from everyone whose heart prompts them to give.” (Exodus 25:2)
오늘은 이스라엘 15년 사역을 마무리하는 마지막 예배이다. Today is the final service concluding fifteen years of our ministry in Israel. 15년이라는 시간은 결코 짧지 않은 시간이었다. Fifteen years is by no means a short time. 처음 이 땅에 발을 디뎠을 때의 떨림, 광야 같은 시간들, 기쁨과 눈물이 교차했던 수많은 순간들이 스쳐 지나간다. The trembling I felt when I first set foot on this land, the wilderness-like seasons, and the countless moments when joy and tears intertwined all pass before me. 그 모든 시간을 돌아보며 내가 그간 무엇을 했을까 질문했을 때, 명확히 떠오르는 이미지가 있다. As I look back on all those years and ask what I have done, one clear image comes to mind. 그것은 우리가 “함께 집을 세웠다”는 것이다. It is that we “built a home together.”
출애굽기 전체를 보면, 이스라엘은 오랫동안 자유를 빼앗긴 사람들처럼 수동적이었고 쉽게 불평했다. Throughout Exodus, Israel was passive like people long deprived of freedom and quick to complain. 그들은 기대했다. 모세가 해결해 주기를, 하나님이 기적을 베풀어 주시기를. They expected Moses to solve things and God to perform miracles. 홍해를 건넌 후에도, 만나를 먹은 후에도, 반석에서 목을 축인 후에도, 그들은 또다시 불평했다. Even after crossing the Red Sea, after eating manna, and after drinking from the rock, they complained again. 하나님은 시내산에서 온 백성 앞에 나타나셨다. God appeared before the whole nation at Mount Sinai. 역사상 유일하게 하나님이 한 민족 전체에게 계시하신 사건이었다. It was the only event in history when God revealed Himself to an entire nation. 백성은 떨었다. The people trembled. 그러나 그 감격이 얼마나 갔나? But how long did that awe last? 40일이다. Forty days. 지도자인 모세가 사라지자 그들은 금송아지를 만들었다. When the leader Moses disappeared, they made a golden calf. 기적도, 시내산 계시도 그들을 변화시키지 못했다. Neither miracles nor the revelation at Sinai transformed them. 왜일까? Why? 받는 것만으로는 사람은 성숙해지지 않기 때문이다. Because receiving alone does not mature a person.
그때 하나님은 전혀 다른 명령을 내리신다. Then God gave an entirely different command. “내게 예물을 가져오라.” “Bring me an offering.” “그들이 나를 위하여 성소를 지을 것이요 내가 그들 가운데 거하리라.” “Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them.” (Exodus 25:8) 하나님은 성막을 직접 만들어 주지 않으셨다. God did not build the tabernacle Himself. 그들이 만들게 하셨다. He made them build it. 금, 은, 동, 가죽, 기름, 기술, 시간—각자가 가진 것을 드려 함께 하나님의 임재를 위한 집을 세우게 하셨다. Gold, silver, bronze, skins, oil, skills, time—each person offered what they had to build together a dwelling for God’s presence. 놀라운 일이 일어났다. Something remarkable happened. “백성이 너무 많이 가져오므로” 모세가 그만하라고 말해야 할 정도였다. “The people are bringing more than enough,” so Moses had to restrain them (Exodus 36:5–6). 성막을 건축하는 동안에는 불평도, 반역도, 분열도 없었다. During the construction of the tabernacle there was no complaining, no rebellion, no division. 기적이 하지 못한 일을 성막 건축이 해냈다. What miracles could not accomplish, building the tabernacle did. 백성을 변화시켰고, 하나로 묶었고, 책임감을 주었다. It transformed the people, bound them together, and gave them responsibility.
사랑하는 여러분, 우리를 성숙하게 만드는 것은 하나님이 우리를 위해 행하신 기적만이 아니라, 우리가 하나님께 드린 헌신이다. Dear beloved, what matures us is not only the miracles God performs for us, but also the devotion we offer to God. 모든 위기를 모세와 기적으로 해결해 주는 동안, 이스라엘은 의존 상태에 머물렀다. While every crisis was solved by Moses and miracles, Israel remained dependent. 그러나 성막을 세우는 순간, 그들은 받는 자에서 동역자로 바뀌었다. But when they began building the tabernacle, they changed from receivers to co-workers. 창세기가 하나님이 인간을 위한 집으로 세상을 창조하신 이야기라면, 출애굽기는 인간이 하나님을 위한 집, 곧 성막을 창조하는 이야기였다. If Genesis is the story of God creating the world as a home for humanity, Exodus is the story of humanity building a home for God, the tabernacle. 창조의 동역자로 이스라엘 백성들이 성막의 건축자가 되면서 그들은 비로소 어린아이에서 어른으로 성장해 갔다. As partners in creation and builders of the tabernacle, they finally grew from children into adults.
성막은 히브리어로 미쉬칸(משכן)이다. The tabernacle in Hebrew is Mishkan (משכן). ‘샤칸’은 거주하다, ‘샤켄’은 이웃이라는 뜻이다. “Shakan” means to dwell, and “shakhen” means neighbor. 하나님은 성막을 통해 백성의 이웃이 되기로 하셨다. Through the tabernacle, God chose to become the neighbor of His people. 그런데 중요한 것은 이 성막이 이스라엘이 광야에서 만든 최초의 공동 작품이라는 사실이다. What is important is that this was the first collective work Israel created in the wilderness. 하나님은 늘 받기만 하던 백성에게 드릴 수 있는 기회를 주셨다. God gave a people who had always only received the opportunity to give. 오늘 토라포션의 제목 테루마(תרומה)이다. Today’s Torah portion is titled Terumah (תרומה). 테루마는 ‘들어 올리다’라는 동사 ‘룸(רומ)’에서 온 것인데, ‘올려 바친 예물’이란 뜻이다. Terumah comes from the verb “rum” (רום), meaning “to lift up,” and refers to an offering lifted up. 이스라엘이 성막을 짓기 위해 예물을 들어 올렸을 때, 사실 들어 올려진 것은 그들의 존재였다. When Israel lifted up their offerings to build the tabernacle, what was truly lifted up was their very being. 그들은 드림으로 존엄을 얻었다. They gained dignity through giving.
지난 15년을 돌아보면 나는 우리 공동체 안에서 광야의 성막을 보았다. Looking back over fifteen years, I have seen a wilderness tabernacle within our community. 우리는 완벽하지 않았다. We were not perfect. 크지도 않았다. We were not large. 때로는 부족했고, 때로는 연약했다. At times we were lacking, at times weak. 그러나 우리는 함께 세웠다. But we built together. 누군가는 보이지 않는 자리에서 기도했고, 누군가는 헌신으로 섬겼고, 누군가는 재정으로, 누군가는 눈물로 이 집을 세웠다. Some prayed in unseen places, some served with dedication, some gave financially, and some built this home with tears. 그간 우리는 이곳에서 함께 샤밧 디너를 했고, 함께 예배를 드렸고, 함께 기도 제목을 나누었다. We shared Shabbat dinners, worshiped together, and shared prayer requests in this place. 그리하여 이곳은 함께 하나님을 만나는 우리의 집이 되었다. And so this became our home where we met God together. 우리의 시간, 우리의 헌신, 우리의 예물을 올려 드렸을 때 사실 들어 올려진 것은 우리의 존재였다. When we lifted up our time, devotion, and offerings, what was truly lifted up was our own being. 우리는 이곳에서 사랑 받는 자, 존귀한 자로 세움을 얻었다. Here we were established as loved and honored people. 이 건물, 이 공동체는 결코 나의 것이 아니었다. This building, this community, was never mine. 우리가 함께 세운 집이고, 하나님이 거하시는 집이다. It is a home we built together and where God dwells. 지도자가 사라지면 금송아지를 만들게 된다. When a leader disappears, people make a golden calf. 그러나 공동체가 함께 세우는 집은 무너지지 않는다. But a home built together by a community does not collapse. 해결책은 언제나 하나이다. The solution is always one. 함께 세우는 것이다. Build together.
성막의 중심에는 속죄소가 있었다. At the heart of the tabernacle stood the mercy seat. 하나님이 만나주시고, 죄를 덮어주시는 자리였다. It was the place where God met them and covered their sins. 히브리서는 말한다. The book of Hebrews says, 히 4:14-16, “그러므로 우리에게 큰 대제사장이 계시니 승천하신 이 곧 하나님의 아들 예수시라 우리가 믿는 도리를 굳게 잡을지어다 우리에게 있는 대제사장은 우리의 연약함을 동정하지 못하실 이가 아니요 모든 일에 우리와 똑같이 시험을 받으신 이로되 죄는 없으시니라 그러므로 우리는 긍휼하심을 받고 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 얻기 위하여 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아갈 것이니라” Hebrews 4:14–16, “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” 구약 시대에는 일년에 한 번이었다. In the Old Testament era, it was once a year. 그러나 이제 우리는 예수 그리스도를 통해 언제든지 하나님의 보좌 앞으로 나아갈 수 있다. But now through Yeshua HaMashiach we can approach God’s throne at any time. 그곳이 우리의 성막이다. That is our tabernacle. 건물이 아니라 하나님의 임재 앞에 서는 자리이다. Not a building, but the place where we stand before God’s presence.
성막이 없을 때 이스라엘의 마음은 금송아지로 향했다. When there was no tabernacle, Israel’s heart turned to the golden calf. 오늘 하나님을 만나지 못하는 사람들의 마음은 어디로 향하는가? Where do the hearts of those who do not meet God today turn? 성공, 돈, 권력, 인정—이 시대의 우상이다. Success, money, power, recognition—these are the idols of our age. 여러분의 삶에는 하나님이 거하시는 성막이 있는가? Is there a tabernacle in your life where God dwells? 죄가 덮이고, 은혜가 임하고, 하나님의 영광이 머무는 지성소가 있는가? Is there a Most Holy Place where sin is covered, grace descends, and God’s glory abides? 하나님의 집은 중요하다. God’s house matters. 그것이 우리를 존귀한 자로 세워주기 때문이다. Because it establishes us as people of dignity.
사랑하는 여러분, 나와 가족은 이제 이 땅을 떠난다. My beloved brothers and sisters, my family and I now leave this land. 그러나 우리가 함께 세운 집은 남는다. But the home we built together remains. 성막은 이동했지만 쉐키나의 영광은 늘 함께 이동했다. The tabernacle moved, but the Shekinah glory always moved with it. 계속 함께 이 집을 세워가라. I urge you to continue building this home together. 계속 자원함으로 드리라. Continue giving willingly. 계속 함께 은혜의 보좌 앞에 나아가라. Continue approaching the throne of grace together. 우리는 받은 것으로 살아간다. We live by what we have received. 그러나 우리가 드린 것으로 존엄해진다. But we become dignified by what we give. 15년을 함께 이 집을 세워 주어 정말로 감사하다. I am truly grateful that you have built this home together with me for fifteen years. 하나님은 말씀하셨다: “그들이 나를 위하여 성소를 지을 것이요 내가 그들 가운데 거하리라.” God said, “Then have them make a sanctuary for me, and I will dwell among them.” (Exodus 25:8) 하나님이 이 집 가운데 계속 거하시기를, 그리고 여러분이 이 곳에서 계속 존귀한 자로 세워지기를 예수님의 이름으로 축원한다. May God continue to dwell in this house, and may you continue to be established here as people of honor, in the name of Yeshua. Amen.
