Prophet 18:

작은 일의 날이라고 멸시하는 자가 누구냐 사람들이 스룹바벨의 손에 다림줄이 있음을 보고 기뻐하리라 이 일곱은 온 세상에 두루 다니는 여호와의 눈이라 하니라” (슥 4:10) “Who dares despise the day of small things, seeing the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand? These seven eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth.” (Zechariah 4:10)

Brothers and sisters, have you ever felt that the work you are doing seems too small? Do you ever feel discouraged, asking yourself, “What difference does what I’m doing make? Can this really create any change?” The lives of the Israelites returning from Babylonian exile were not easy. Jerusalem was not the capital of a once-glorious kingdom, but a humble city where even the temple had disappeared. The restoration and glory of Jerusalem, as prophesied by the prophets, were not yet visible, and people struggled to survive due to economic hardship. In this context, the prophetic call of Haggai initiated the long-delayed rebuilding of the temple, which had been postponed for sixteen years. However, the task of rebuilding the temple felt like a very small undertaking. Compared to the magnificent Temple of Solomon, its scale seemed insignificant. God spoke to them through the prophet Zechariah. Let us examine the message he delivered to them.

Zechariah 4:6, “So he said to me, ‘This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.” At that time, Zerubbabel, tasked with rebuilding the temple, faced many obstacles. Opposition from surrounding forces, the discouragement of the people, harsh political and economic conditions…In such circumstances, rebuilding the temple seemed impossible to him. Then God spoke to him. He said that it would not be by human might or power, but by God’s Spirit… Even the smallest beginning can lead to great things when God is with us. What seems impossible to human eyes can become possible through God’s Spirit if it aligns with His will. Therefore, the angel continues to deliver God’s message to Zechariah. Zechariah 4:7, “Who are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘Grace, grace to it!'” Zerubbabel is now standing before a ‘mighty mountain.’ Though he had returned from exile to rebuild the temple, political pressure, economic hardship, interference from the Samaritans, and the people’s discouragement all stood before him like a giant mountain. Yet God declares that this mountain will become level ground.“되리라”라는 미래 시제는 하나님의 주권적 약속을 나타낸다. The future tense “will become” signifies God’s sovereign promise. The rebuilding of the temple will not be accomplished by Zerubbabel’s ability but by God’s power. Zerubbabel still sees the ‘mighty mountain,’ but God has already declared it level ground. In this way, faith is speaking and declaring what is not yet visible. God is the one who calls into being what does not exist. God mentioned the capstone, and the “capstone” is the stone placed when a building is completed. The reconstruction of the temple had just begun, but God spoke of the moment when Zerubbabel would lay the capstone, assuring that the day would surely come. Faith looks at what is unseen and calls into being what does not yet exist. “Grace, grace to it!” The repetition of “grace” emphasizes that God’s favor works from beginning to end. Our declarations are not mere self-affirmations or positive thinking, but proclamations relying on God’s grace.

What is the mighty mountain that is blocking your path right now? Is it financial difficulties? Health issues? Problems in relationships? God speaks: “Mighty mountain, who are you? You will become level ground before Zerubbabel!” Let us also declare this in faith. “Mighty mountain, you shall become level ground before me. May the Lord’s grace, grace be upon me.” Even if circumstances appear unchanged, when we declare in faith expecting God’s work, He will accomplish it.

Zechariah 4:8-9, “Then the word of the LORD came to me: ‘The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. You know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you.'” God can accomplish everything. Yet God needs hands to carry out His will. Although Zerubbabel returned from exile and laid the foundation of the temple, he had let go of the work for sixteen years due to the opposition of the Samaritans and various internal and external difficulties. But God wanted Zerubbabel to continue fulfilling his mission. God said, “The hands that laid the foundation will also complete it,” renewing his calling. Is there anyone here who has let go of the mission God has given you? Did you start with passion but stop because circumstances are blocked, people interfere, finances are tight, or you are discouraged internally? At times like these, we may question, “Has God really entrusted this work to me?” However, God remembers the beginning of the work and waits for our hands to carry it through to completion. If we do not give up and keep working, God will ultimately accomplish it.

Zechariah 4:10, “Who dares despise the day of small things, seeing the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand? These seven eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth.” The “day of small things” in Hebrew is ‘Yom Ketanot (יוֹם קְטַנּוֹת)’. The beginning of the temple reconstruction appeared very small and humble. The temple seemed so humble compared to Solomon’s Temple that some elderly people wept at the difference. Having returned from exile and struggling to survive, rebuilding the temple seemed trivial from an external perspective: “What’s so great about this?” But God tells us not to despise the day of small things. Because through these small days, God’s presence is restored.

What will these small days eventually lead to? First, the reconstruction of the temple signifies the restoration of God’s presence. Zechariah 2:10-11, “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for I am coming and I will dwell among you. Many nations will be joined with the LORD on that day and will become His people, and I will dwell among you. You will know that the LORD Almighty has sent me to you.” Therefore, the days of building the temple were by no means days of small things. Zechariah prophesies that Jerusalem, with God’s presence restored, will eventually become the center of the nations. Zechariah 8:22, “Many peoples and powerful nations will come to Jerusalem to seek the LORD Almighty and to entreat His favor.” This foretells that nations will come to know God and gather in Jerusalem. In the New Testament, this promise becomes reality through Jesus’ commands and the Acts of the Apostles. As seen in Matthew and Acts, the gospel that began in Jerusalem spreads to the entire world. The temple reconstruction, which people in Zerubbabel’s time considered a “day of small things,” was actually laying the foundation for the salvation of all nations.

Regarding the day when the salvation of the nations will truly begin, Zechariah prophesies as follows. Zechariah 9:9, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey…. He will proclaim peace to the nations, and his rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.” Through whom was this prophecy fulfilled? It was fulfilled through Jesus, who entered Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives. Matthew 21:4-5, “This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: ‘Say to Daughter Zion, see, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'” The Messiah to come was not one who rode a horse for war. He came humbly riding on a donkey to establish a reign of peace. Now, through Jesus Christ, the time has come for all nations to seek God and ask for His grace. Thus, the small beginning of temple reconstruction in 520 BCE ultimately prepared the stage for the coming of the Savior of all humanity. A small beginning became the starting point for the greatest history.

Zechariah also gives this prophecy. Zechariah 12:10, “I will pour out a spirit of grace and supplication on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and they will look on the one they have pierced and mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve for him as one grieves for a firstborn.” The Apostle John interprets the piercing of Jesus’ side on the cross as the fulfillment of Zechariah 12:10. John 19:37, “And another Scripture says, ‘They will look on the one they have pierced.'” Here, “look” does not mean merely seeing, but looking in faith, as when the Israelites looked upon the bronze serpent lifted by Moses. Therefore, Jesus’ crucifixion is an event in which God pours out grace on those who look upon it in faith, bringing repentance and salvation. To look upon the one who was pierced is to recognize one’s own sin and look to Jesus. It means realizing that He was pierced because of my sins and turning to God in repentance. This repentance is not mere regret but a deep sorrow, like mourning the loss of a firstborn. Such mourning transforms us and leads us to a new life. Thus, the small beginning of the temple reconstruction prepared the way for all humanity to receive a spirit of grace and supplication, leading to true repentance and the forgiveness of sins.

Personally, my wife and I are going through “days of small things” these days. Our visa was denied, and the number of people attending church has decreased compared to before. As the war in Israel prolongs and intensifies, anti-Semitism grows, and even in Korea, the view toward Israel is unfavorable. Differences in perspective regarding Jerusalem and the end times within the church show no sign of narrowing. In such circumstances, the days spent serving as a minister in Israel felt so much like “days of small things.”

However, while preparing this sermon, I remembered the prayer of Deacon Samuel from two weeks ago. After praying, he conveyed the Lord’s heart: “I have called you, so why do you lose heart?” Last week, during a conversation with Deacon Samuel, I realized that for a Jew and a Gentile, who were once enemies, to become one new man and come to the Father is the most difficult task, yet precisely for that reason, it is the calling that challenges me the most. Coming to Israel 15 years ago was certainly God’s calling. “Since Zerubbabel’s hands laid the foundation of this temple, his hands will also complete it.” As I read this passage, it seemed that God was telling me to take hold once again of the small tasks He has entrusted to me. So I intend to undertake the small tasks entrusted to me with a renewed heart. The mighty mountain will become level ground. The Lord’s grace—yes, His grace—will be multiplied even more. I pray that the greatest mission—Jews and Gentiles becoming one new man and approaching the Heavenly Father—will ultimately come to pass in our church.

William Carey was a shoemaker. People around him mocked, saying, “Can someone like you really change India?” However, he began his missionary work, proclaiming, “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God.” Today, the church in India has grown to thirty million believers. That is why Asha is also here worshiping today with us. A small beginning became the foundation for great history. The Moravian Brotherhood maintained 24-hour prayer for 100 years. That small spark of prayer sparked a worldwide missionary revival. Even if our dedication seems so small now, God fulfills His redemptive plan through our hands. The small acts of obedience we are doing are not merely “small things” but are connected to God’s grand plan. It may appear small to human eyes, but it is precious to God. God will surely complete the small beginnings we obeyed.

Lord, help us not to despise the small tasks You have entrusted to us today.

We declare in faith that the great mountains before us will become level ground.

May Your great work be accomplished through our small acts of obedience.

Let us grasp our mission again and complete it through Your abundant grace.

We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
