Prophet 19: 요엘: 부흥의 전조
“그 후에 내가 내 영을 만민에게 부어 주리니 너희 자녀들이 장래 일을 말할 것이며 너희 늙은이는 꿈을 꾸며 너희 젊은이는 이상을 볼 것이며 그 때에 내가 또 내 영을 남종과 여종에게 부어 줄 것이며” (욜 2:28-29) “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.”
우리는 부흥을 갈망한다. We long for revival. 그러나 성경이 말하는 부흥은 그냥 오지 않는다. But the revival the Bible speaks of does not come automatically. 죄에서 돌이켜 회개하는 사람과 공동체에 부흥이 임하게 된다. Revival comes to those individuals and communities who turn from sin and repent. 하나님이 이끄시는 부흥의 전조는 무엇일까? What are the signs of a revival that God is bringing? 오늘 요엘서 말씀을 통해 하나님이 우리에게 주시는 부흥에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. Today, through the book of Joel, we will explore the revival God wants to give us.
요엘서는 메뚜기 재앙으로 시작한다. Joel begins with a locust plague. 욜 1:4, “팥중이가 남긴 것을 메뚜기가 먹고 메뚜기가 남긴 것을 느치가 먹고 느치가 남긴 것을 황충이 먹었도다” Joel 1:4, “What the locust swarm has left the great locusts have eaten; what the great locusts have left the young locusts have eaten; what the young locusts have left other locusts have eaten.” 요엘 선지자는 메뚜기 재앙이 연속적으로 일어난 상황을 묘사하며, 백성들의 절망과 애통을 표현하고 있다. The prophet Joel describes successive waves of locusts, expressing the despair and lamentation of the people. 욜 1:12, “포도나무가 시들었고 무화과나무가 말랐으며 석류나무와 대추나무와 사과나무와 밭의 모든 나무가 다 시들었으니 이러므로 사람의 즐거움이 말랐도다” Joel 1:12, “The vine is dried up and the fig tree is withered; the pomegranate, the palm and the apple tree–all the trees of the field–are dried up. Surely the joy of mankind is withered away.” 여기서 ‘즐거움’은 히브리어로 ‘사손(שָׂשׂוֹן)’인데, “뛰며 기뻐하다, 춤추다, 즐거워하다”란 뜻의 ‘수스(שׂושׂ)’에서 온 말이다. Here, the word “joy” is the Hebrew “sason” (שָׂשׂוֹן), which comes from “sus” (שׂושׂ), meaning “to leap, to rejoice, to dance.” ‘사손’은 마음속 기쁨이 아니라 밖으로 드러나는 춤추는 기쁨이다. “Sason” is not just inner gladness but an outwardly expressed, dancing joy. 그런데 하나님은 그것이 말랐다고 하신다. But God says that this joy has dried up. 그들의 삶에서 웃음과 노래가 사라진 것이다. Laughter and song disappeared from their lives. 여기서 언급된 포도나무, 무화과나무, 석류나무, 대추나무, 사과나무는 고대나 지금이나 이스라엘 사람들의 생계와 일상과 직결되어 있는 것이다. The vine, fig tree, pomegranate, date palm, and apple tree mentioned here are directly tied to the livelihood and daily life of the people of Israel, both then and now. 농작물이 시들고 열매가 망가지면, 음식과 수입, 거래와 경제 활동이 모두 영향을 받는다. When crops wither and fruit is ruined, food, income, trade, and the entire economy are affected. 따라서 “즐거움이 말랐다”는 것은 일차적으로 경제적 풍요와 안락함이 사라졌다는 뜻이다. Therefore, “joy has dried up” means, first of all, that economic prosperity and comfort have disappeared. 또한 이스라엘에서 포도주와 과일은 축제와 기쁨의 상징인데, 그 나무가 시들었다는 것은 공동체의 즐거움과 사회적 활력이 말라버렸다는 의미다. In Israel, wine and fruit are symbols of celebration and joy, so the trees withering means that the joy and social vitality of the community have dried up. 이처럼 하나님과의 관계에서 멀어진 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님이 보내신 재앙을 통해 삶의 활력과 기쁨을 상실하게 된다. In this way, the Israelites, estranged from God, lose vitality and joy through the calamity God has sent.
2023년 10월 7일 이후 이스라엘 사회는 ‘사람의 즐거움’이 말랐다. Since October 7, 2023, “the joy of the people” has dried up in Israeli society. 그 때 시작된 가자 전쟁이 지금까지 계속되고 있다. The war in Gaza that began then still continues. 유창이의 어릴 적 친구 마탄은 현재 가자지구에서 탱크를 운전하고 있는데, 제대로 씻지도 못하고, 잠자리도 없어서 비어 있는 건물에서 잠을 잔다고 한다. Yuchang’s childhood friend Matan is now driving a tank in Gaza, unable to bathe properly, and sleeps in empty buildings because there are no proper sleeping quarters. 마탄은 40일 마다 이틀 휴가를 받아 집에 오는데, 엄마인 씨마는 노숙자처럼 냄새가 진동하는 아들이 돌아오기를 매번 잠도 못 자며 기다린다. Every 40 days Matan comes home for two days, and his mother Sima waits sleeplessly for her son who returns smelling like a homeless man. 그 좋아하던 한국 드라마도 10월 7일 이후 보지 않는다고 한다. She says she has not watched the Korean dramas she used to love since October 7. 자녀의 안전을 걱정하고, 가족들이 일상 속 평화를 잃은 지금 이스라엘의 현실은 바로 “사람의 즐거움이 말랐다”는 말로 표현할 수 있을 것이다. Worrying for their children’s safety and losing daily peace, the current reality of Israel can truly be described as “the joy of the people has dried up.”
한편 오늘날 청년들은 취업과 미래의 불확실성 때문에 심리적 압박을 크게 느끼고 있다. Meanwhile, today’s young people feel great psychological pressure because of job hunting and the uncertainty of the future. 연구를 아무리 열심히 해도 선점하지 못하면 그간의 노력이 무용지물이 되는 현실 앞에서 절망한다. They despair at the reality that even after working hard on their research, if they are not first, all their efforts are wasted. 좋은 직장에 들어가야 하고, 논문을 빨리 써야 하는데, 집값은 오르고, 물가는 치솟는다. They must get a good job, finish their thesis quickly, but housing prices soar and the cost of living skyrockets. 게다가 사회 곳곳에 깊어진 좌우 분열과 정치적 갈등으로 마음이 상한다. In addition, their hearts are burdened by deepening polarization and political conflicts throughout society. 이 모든 압박 속에서 마음의 즐거움이 말라간다. Under all this pressure, the joy of their hearts is drying up.
온 땅이 황폐해지고 사람의 즐거움이 말라버리는 것, 요엘에 의하면 이것은 “여호와의 날”이 다가오고 있다는 전조다. The whole land becoming desolate and people’s joy drying up – according to Joel, this is a sign that “the Day of the Lord” is near. 욜 1:15, “슬프다 그 날이여 여호와의 날이 가까웠나니 곧 멸망 같이 전능자에게로부터 이르리로다” Joel 1:15, “Alas for that day! For the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty.” 여호와의 날은 심판의 날이다. The Day of the Lord is a day of judgment. ‘심판’이라는 히브리어 ‘사팟(שָׁפַט)’은 단순히 벌을 준다는 뜻이 아니라, 판결하여 바른 길로 돌이키게 한다는 뜻이다. The Hebrew word for “judgment,” “shaphat” (שָׁפַט), does not merely mean to punish, but to render a verdict that turns people back to the right way. 하나님은 심판을 통해 백성을 깨우신다. God awakens His people through judgment. 우리가 안일하게 살아가며 영적으로 잠들어 있을 때 하나님은 우리의 삶을 흔드신다. When we live complacently and spiritually asleep, God shakes our lives. 관계의 문제, 경제적 위기, 질병 – 이런 것들이 다 하나님의 징계와 경고일 수 있다. Problems in relationships, financial crises, sickness – these can all be God’s discipline and warnings. C.S. 루이스는 “고난은 하나님의 메가폰”이라고 말했다. C.S. Lewis said, “Pain is God’s megaphone.” 하나님은 고난을 통해서 우리를 깨우시기 원하신다. God wants to wake us up through suffering. 하나님께서 우리 삶의 즐거움들을 제하여 가실 때, 우리는 하나님이 우리에게 무엇을 말씀하시기 원하시는지 귀 기울여야 한다. When God takes away the joys of our lives, we must listen carefully to what He is trying to say to us. 혹시 지금 여러분의 삶에도 하나님이 흔드시는 영역이 있는가? Is there an area in your life that God is shaking right now? 재정의 위기, 관계의 깨어짐, 건강 문제… 이러한 것들은 여러분의 영혼을 각성하게 하기 위한 하나님의 메가폰일 수 있다. A financial crisis, broken relationships, health problems – these may be God’s megaphone to awaken your soul. 이 때 우리는 낙심하거나 원망하는 대신, 하나님 앞에 무릎 꿇고 그분의 뜻을 묻고 돌이켜야 한다. At such times, instead of falling into despair or complaint, we must kneel before God, ask His will, and turn back to Him.
웨일즈 부흥은 1730년대에서 1760년대에 걸쳐 일어났다. The Welsh Revival took place between the 1730s and 1760s. 당시 영국 사회는 영적 무기력과 도덕적 타락이 가득했다. At that time, British society was filled with spiritual lethargy and moral decay. 광산과 산업 현장에서는 술 취함과 폭력이 만연했고, 교회는 점점 텅 비어갔다. Drunkenness and violence were rampant in mines and workplaces, and churches were becoming empty. 이때 하나님이 사용하신 인물이 하월 해리스와 다니엘 로울랜드였다. At that time, God used Howell Harris and Daniel Rowland. 그들은 거리에서 회개를 선포했고, 광부들과 농민들이 울며 죄를 자백했다. They proclaimed repentance in the streets, and miners and farmers wept, confessing their sins. 집회는 보통 새벽까지 이어졌고, 사람들이 일터에서도 찬송을 부르며 눈물을 흘렸다. The gatherings often continued until dawn, and people sang hymns and wept even at their workplaces. 그 결과 사회 전체가 변했다. As a result, society as a whole was transformed. 폭력이 줄어들고 가정이 회복되며, 교회 출석률이 급증했다. Violence decreased, families were restored, and church attendance surged. 하나님의 심판적 경고가 회개로 이어지고, 회개가 사회적 변혁과 부흥으로 이어진 실제 사례다. This is a real example of how God’s warning led to repentance, and repentance led to social transformation and revival.
요엘 선지자는 이렇게 외친다. The prophet Joel cries out. 욜 2:12-13, “너희는 이제라도 금식하고 울며 애통하고 마음을 다하여 내게로 돌아오라 하셨나니 너희는 옷을 찢지 말고 마음을 찢고 너희 하나님 여호와께로 돌아올지어다” Joel 2:12–13, “”Even now, return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning. Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God.” 회개는 히브리어로 ‘슈브(שׁוּב)’다. Repentance in Hebrew is “shuv” (שׁוּב). 이는 단순히 후회한다는 뜻이 아니라, 삶의 방향을 완전히 바꿔 하나님께로 돌아가는 것을 의미한다. It does not just mean to feel regret but to completely change the direction of one’s life and return to God. 요엘은 제사장과 백성 모두 애통하며 마음을 찢고 통곡하며 하나님께로 돌아오라고 촉구한다. Joel urges both priests and people to mourn, tear their hearts, and return to God. 이것이 부흥의 열쇠이다. This is the key to revival. 사도행전 2장에서 베드로가 설교했을 때 사람들은 마음에 찔려 “우리가 어찌할꼬?”라고 물었다. In Acts 2, when Peter preached, people were pierced to the heart and asked, “What shall we do?” 베드로는 이렇게 답했다. Peter replied, “회개하고 세례를 받으라.” “Repent and be baptized.” (Acts 2:37–38) 우리의 회개는 감정적 눈물로 끝나서는 안 된다. Our repentance must not end with emotional tears. 삶의 방향이 바뀌어야 한다. The direction of our life must change. 죄의 습관을 끊고, 용서를 구하고, 돌려줄 것은 돌려주고, 깨어진 관계를 회복해야 한다. We must break sinful habits, seek forgiveness, return what we have taken, and restore broken relationships.
1907년 평양 대부흥 때 길선주 장로는 공개적으로 죄를 자백했다. During the 1907 Pyongyang Revival, Elder Gil Seon-Ju publicly confessed his sins. 당시 그는 자신이 형제들을 질시하고, 특히 방위량 선교사를 극도로 미워했던 것을 고백하며, 땅바닥에 무릎을 꿇고 울며 회개했다. At the time, he confessed that he had harbored jealousy toward his brothers and especially hated missionary Samuel Moffett, kneeling on the ground and weeping in repentance. 그 순간 집회장 안에 회개의 영이 임했고, 사람들은 밤새도록 울며 죄를 자백했다. At that moment, the spirit of repentance filled the assembly, and people wept and confessed their sins all night. 이후 사람들은 자신이 도둑질한 물건들을 돌려주고, 원수를 찾아가 용서를 구했다. Afterwards, people returned what they had stolen and sought forgiveness from their enemies. 평양의 사회 질서가 달라지고, 술집이 문을 닫고, 폭력 사건이 줄어드는 변화가 일어났다. The social order of Pyongyang changed, bars closed, and violent incidents decreased. 한 사람의 회개가 도시를, 나라를 바꿨다. The repentance of one person changed a city and a nation. 하나님은 지금도 회개하는 한 사람을 찾으신다. God is still looking for one person who will repent.
하나님께서 성령을 부어주시겠다고 약속하신 시점은 바로 회개가 일어난 이후였다. God promised to pour out His Spirit right after repentance took place. 욜 2:28-29, “그 후에 내가 내 영을 만민에게 부어 주리니 너희 자녀들이 장래 일을 말할 것이며 너희 늙은이는 꿈을 꾸며 너희 젊은이는 이상을 볼 것이며 그 때에 내가 또 내 영을 남종과 여종에게 부어 줄 것이며” Joel 2:28–29, “”And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.” 회개하는 사람에게 하나님은 당신의 영을 부어 주시겠다고 약속하셨다. God promised to pour out His Spirit on those who repent. 여기 쓰인 히브리어 루아흐 (רוּחַ)는 바람, 숨, 영을 의미한다. The Hebrew word used here, “ruach” (רוּחַ), means wind, breath, or spirit. 하나님은 죽은 뼈에 생기를 불어넣듯 우리에게 새 생명을 불어넣으신다. Just as God breathed life into dry bones, He breathes new life into us. 무식하고 용감했던 베드로는 “주는 그리스도시요 살아 계신 하나님의 아들이십니다”라고 고백했으면서도 위기가 오자 예수님을 세 번 부인했다. Peter, who had boldly confessed, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” denied Jesus three times when crisis came. 그런 그가 180도 변한 시점은 하나님의 영이 그에게 부어진 이후였다. He was transformed 180 degrees after God’s Spirit was poured upon him. 오순절 성령이 임하고 사람들이 방언을 하자 그는 이렇게 말한다. When the Spirit came at Pentecost and people spoke in tongues, he said. 행 2:16-17, “이는 곧 선지자 요엘을 통하여 말씀하신 것이니 일렀으되 하나님이 말씀하시기를 말세에 내가 내 영을 모든 육체에 부어 주리니 너희의 자녀들은 예언할 것이요 너희의 젊은이들은 환상을 보고 너희의 늙은이들은 꿈을 꾸리라” Acts 2:16–17, “this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.” 베드로는 오순절 사건을 요엘서의 성취라고 말했다. Peter declared that Pentecost was the fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy. 성령이 부어진 결과 사람들은 각 나라 말로 하나님의 큰 일을 전했다. As a result of the Spirit being poured out, people declared the mighty works of God in their own languages. 공동체가 살아나고 복음이 퍼져나가기 시작했다. The community came alive, and the gospel began to spread. 예수님은 요한복음 14장에서 “내가 아버지께 구하겠으니 그가 또 다른 보혜사를 너희에게 주사 영원토록 너희와 함께 있게 하리라”(요 14:16)고 약속하셨다. In John 14, Jesus promised, “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever” (John 14:16). 예수님의 승천 이후 성령의 임재는 평범한 제자들이 믿음의 공동체를 세우고 세상을 변화시킨 능력이 되었다. After Jesus’ ascension, the presence of the Holy Spirit empowered ordinary disciples to build faith communities and transform the world.
오늘날 많은 청년들이 스펙과 경쟁, 그리고 자신의 배경 때문에 마음의 불안을 느낀다. Today many young people feel anxious because of résumés, competition, and their backgrounds. “나는 흙수저라서 성공할 수 있을까?” 이런 생각이 삶의 즐거움을 가로막고, 마음을 시들게 한다. Thoughts like “Can I succeed with my poor background?” block their joy and wither their hearts. 그러나 삶의 모든 문제에 대한 답은, 하나님의 영이 우리 가운데 부어져야 한다는 것이다. But the answer to all of life’s problems is that God’s Spirit must be poured into us. 하나님의 영이 부어지면, 자신의 가치와 정체성을 하나님 안에서 찾게 된다. When God’s Spirit is poured out, we find our worth and identity in Him. “나는 누구인가?”라는 질문에 사회적 잣대 대신 하나님이 나를 존귀하게 지으셨고, 나를 사랑하신다는 확신이 중심이 된다. The question “Who am I?” is answered not by society’s standards but by the assurance that God has created me with dignity and loves me. 그렇게 된다면 내가 흙수저든 금수저든, 하나님 안에서의 존재 의미와 사명이 우선시되게 된다. Whether I am poor or rich, my identity and mission in God become my priority. 그러한 사람이 예언하고, 환상을 보고, 꿈을 꾸게 되는 것이다. Such a person will prophesy, see visions, and dream dreams. 하나님의 영이 부어지면, 세상의 평가보다 하나님과의 관계에서 오는 평안을 경험한다. When God’s Spirit is poured out, we experience peace that comes from relationship with God rather than from the world’s evaluations. 삶의 불안 속에서도, 성령님이 나와 함께 하시고, 나를 인도하신다는 믿음이 마음을 지켜준다. Even in life’s anxieties, faith that the Spirit is with me and guiding me guards my heart. 하나님의 영은 우리 내면의 열정을 새롭게 하고, 나 자신의 사명과 은사를 발견하게 한다. God’s Spirit renews our inner passion and helps us discover our calling and gifts. 그러한 사람은 세상의 스펙 경쟁에 몰두하지 않고, 하나님 나라와 영적 성장을 위해 삶을 투자하게 된다. Such a person no longer obsesses over worldly competition but invests life into God’s kingdom and spiritual growth. 삶의 목표가 하나님 중심으로 바뀌며, 진정한 만족과 기쁨을 경험한다. Their life goals become God-centered, and they experience true satisfaction and joy. 또한 하나님의 영은 사랑과 겸손, 섬김의 마음을 부어주어, 청년들이 서로를 세우고 격려하게 한다. God’s Spirit also pours love, humility, and a heart of service, so that young people build each other up and encourage one another. 경쟁과 비교심에 지쳐 있던 마음이, 함께 나누고 도우며 성장하는 공동체적 마음으로 변화되는 것이다. Hearts weary from competition and comparison are transformed into communal hearts that share, help, and grow together. 이렇게 하나님의 영이 부어져야 우리는 하나님께서 주시는 능력과 지혜로, 세상의 스펙을 넘어서는 영적 능력과 영향력을 발휘하게 되는 것이다. When God’s Spirit is poured out in this way, we receive power and wisdom from God and exercise spiritual influence beyond worldly qualifications.
지금 우리는 욤 키푸르를 앞두고 열흘 간 경외의 날 기도회를 하고 있다. Right now we are in the Ten Days of Awe, holding prayer meetings before Yom Kippur. 이 시간이 회개의 기도가 터지는 시간이 되길 바란다. May this be a time when prayers of repentance break forth. 내 삶에 즐거움이 마른 것은 회개하라는 하나님의 초청이다. The drying up of joy in my life is God’s invitation to repent. 하나님의 심판은 두려움을 주기 위함이 아니다. God’s judgment is not meant to terrify us. 우리를 그분의 사랑으로 이끌기 위함이다. It is to lead us into His love. 회개는 하나님께 돌아가는 것이다. Repentance is returning to God. 우리가 하나님께 돌아갈 때 하나님은 성령을 우리에게 부어주실 것이다. When we return to God, He will pour out His Spirit on us. 그 때 우리는 새로운 비전과 꿈을 꾸게 될 것이다. Then we will dream new dreams and see new visions. 따라서 우리의 고난은 우리를 회복케 하는 부흥의 전조일 뿐이다. Therefore, our suffering is only a sign of revival that will restore us. 우리는 하나님의 영이 부어지는 은혜를 간절히 사모하며 그 은혜를 체험해야 한다. We must earnestly long for the outpouring of God’s Spirit and experience that grace. 앞으로 천하를 공의로 심판하실 여호와의 날이 올 것이다. The Day of the Lord will come when He will judge the earth with righteousness. 하나님의 영이 우리 가운데 부어져야 심판의 날이 우리와 상관 없게 되는 것이다. God’s Spirit must be poured into us so that the day of judgment will no longer be against us. 지금 나의 힘든 상황이 더이상 문제가 되지 않게 되는 것이다. Then my present hardships will no longer be the problem. 여러분, 오늘 하나님 앞에 마음을 찢고 나아가길 바란다. Friends, today I urge you to rend your hearts and go before God. 하나님은 회개하는 심령 위에 성령을 부으신다. God pours out His Spirit upon the repentant heart.
주여, 나의 영적 잠을 깨워 주소서. Lord, awaken me from my spiritual sleep. 하나님의 심판 앞에 숨지 않고 회개하게 하소서. Help me not to hide before God’s judgment but to repent. 사람의 즐거움이 말라가는 이 시대에 주님의 영이 부어진 사람으로 살게 하소서. In this generation where people’s joy is drying up, let me live as one filled with Your Spirit. 성령으로 충만케 하셔서 나를 부르신 삶의 현장에서 참된 부흥의 도구로 살게 하여 주옵소서. Fill me with the Holy Spirit so that I may be an instrument of true revival in the place You have called me. 예수님의 이름으로 기도합니다. 아멘. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
