Prophet 9: 예레미야 1 Jeremiah 1- 건설을 위한 파괴
“보라 내가 오늘 너를 여러 나라와 여러 왕국 위에 세워 네가 그것들을 뽑고 파괴하며 파멸하고 넘어뜨리며 건설하고 심게 하였느니라” (렘 1:10) “See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.” (Jeremiah 1:10)
안전의 기초가 흔들리는 것을 좋아하는 사람은 없다. Nobody likes their foundation of safety to be shaken. 그래서 사람들은 모험하기보다는 안주하길 원하고, 개혁을 위해 몸부림치기보다는 그냥 편안한 자신의 일상에 머물러 살길 원한다. That’s why people prefer comfort over risk and choose to remain in their familiar routines rather than struggle for reform. 재난과 위험은 다 비껴가고 내게 평안만 찾아오길 바란다. They hope that all disasters and dangers will pass them by and that only peace will come their way. 오늘 우리는 예레미야 선지자에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. Today, we want to reflect on the prophet Jeremiah. 예레미야는 흔히 눈물의 선지자라고 한다. Jeremiah is often called the weeping prophet. 그러나 그는 눈물만 흘리지 않았다. But he was not a prophet of tears alone. 눈물을 흘리며 사람들의 안전지대를 과감하게 흔들었던 선지자였다. He was a prophet who boldly shook people’s safety zone while shedding tears. 오늘 말씀을 통해 우리는 지금 나의 안전의 기초를 어디에 두고 있는지 살펴보길 원한다. Through today’s message, we want to examine where we have placed the foundation of our own safety. 그리고 정말 안전한 삶을 위해 내가 선택해야 할 것이 무엇인지 생각해보는 시간이 되길 원한다. And we hope it will be a time to consider what choices we must make for a truly secure life.
하나님이 예레미야에게 말씀하신다. God speaks to Jeremiah. 렘 1:4-5, “내가 너를 모태에 짓기 전에 너를 알았고 네가 배에서 나오기 전에 너를 성별하였고 너를 여러 나라의 선지자로 세웠노라.” Jeremiah 1:4-5, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” 여기서 우리는 선지자의 사역이 개인의 결정이 아닌, 하나님의 주권적 계획임을 보게 된다. Here we see that the prophet’s ministry is not a personal decision but part of God’s sovereign plan. 하나님은 예레미야를 그가 태어나기 전부터 아셨다. God knew Jeremiah even before he was born. ‘알았다’는 히브리어로 ‘야다 (יָדַע)’인데 이는 지식이 아니라 관계를 뜻한다. The Hebrew word for “knew” is yada (יָדַע), which means not just knowledge but relationship. 하나님은 오래 전부터 알던 이 관계를 통해 예레미야를 파토스의 동반자로 부르셨다. Through this long-known relationship, God called Jeremiah to be a companion in His pathos. 그러나 그것은 예레미야에겐 부담스런 경험이었다. But for Jeremiah, this was a burdensome experience. 그의 나이 불과 스무 살 때의 일이었기 때문이다. It happened when he was only about twenty years old. 그래서 예레미야는 “슬프도소이다 나는 아이라 말할 줄을 알지 못하나이다 (6절)”라고 반응한다. So Jeremiah responds, “Alas, Sovereign LORD, I do not know how to speak; I am too young” (v.6). 특히 하나님께서 자신을 여러 나라의 선지자로 세웠다는 말씀을 들었을 때 예레미야의 반응은 기쁨이 아니라 슬픔이었다. Especially when God said He appointed him as a prophet to the nations, Jeremiah’s reaction was not joy, but sorrow. 사명의 무게에 비해 자신의 연약함이 너무 크게 느껴졌기 때문이다. That’s because his sense of weakness felt too great compared to the weight of the calling. 더군다나 그가 외쳐야 할 메세지는 평안이 아니라 재앙에 관한 것이었기 때문이었다. Moreover, the message he was to proclaim was not peace, but disaster. 다른 예언자들이 ‘확실한 평강’을 예언하는 시대에 홀로 재앙에 대해 외쳐야 하는 것은 너무도 슬픈 사명이었다. In a time when other prophets were proclaiming “certain peace,” it was a sorrowful mission to cry out alone about impending disaster. 특히 그가 전해야 했던 메세지는 자신의 나라 유다가 멸망한다는 것과 예루살렘 성전이 무너진다는 것이었다. Especially because the message he had to deliver was that his own nation Judah would fall, and that the temple in Jerusalem would be destroyed.
이스라엘 백성들에게 유다 국가와 성전은 무엇인가? What did the kingdom of Judah and the temple mean to the Israelites? 그것은 그들의 안전의 기초였다. They were the very foundation of their safety. 그들은 다윗 왕조가 영원할 것이라 믿었다. They believed the Davidic dynasty would last forever. 다윗 언약은 왕조의 영원함을 보증하는 언약이었기 때문이었다. That’s because the Davidic covenant guaranteed the everlasting reign of the dynasty. 그들은 또한 예루살렘 성전이 영원할 것이라 믿었다. They also believed the temple in Jerusalem would endure forever. 그것은 그들이 성전에서 살아 계신 하나님의 임재와 영광을 보았기 때문이다. That was because they had seen the living presence and glory of God in the temple. 그래서 솔로몬은 예루살렘에 성전을 봉헌하면서 “주께서 영원히 계실 처소로소이다(왕상 8:13)”라고 외쳤다. That’s why Solomon cried out at the dedication of the temple, “I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever” (1 Kings 8:13). 기원전 701년 히스기야 왕 당시 앗수르 제국의 산헤립이 쳐들어 왔을 때에도 예루살렘은 무너지지 않았다. Even in 701 BCE, when Sennacherib of Assyria attacked during King Hezekiah’s reign, Jerusalem did not fall. 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님께서 이 성을 지키고 계심을 경험했다. The Israelites experienced firsthand that God was protecting this city. 그러나 거기서부터 거짓 안전감이 시작됐다. But from there, a false sense of security began. 예루살렘은 영원할 것이라는 거짓 믿음이 싹텄다. A false belief took root — that Jerusalem would last forever. 이 거짓 안전감에 사로잡혀 백성들은 세상 풍요의 신인 바알의 이름을 부르기 시작했다. Gripped by this false security, the people began to call on the name of Baal, the god of worldly abundance. 하나님 만이 아니라 두 주인을 섬기기 시작한 것이었다. They began to serve not only God, but two masters.
하나님은 당신의 백성들이 의지하고 있는 거짓 안전감을 제거하셔야 했다. God had to remove the false sense of security that His people relied on. 렘 25:9, “보라 내가 북쪽 모든 종족과 내 종 바벨론의 왕 느부갓네살을 불러다가 이 땅과 그 주민과 사방 모든 나라를 쳐서 진멸하여 그들을 놀램과 비웃음 거리가 되게 하며 땅으로 영원한 폐허가 되게 할 것이라” Jeremiah 25:9, “I will summon all the peoples of the north and my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,” declares the LORD, “and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroy them and make them an object of horror and scorn, and an everlasting ruin.” 예레미야 선지자는 하나님의 뜻대로 유다 국가의 파멸을 외쳐야 했다. The prophet Jeremiah had to proclaim the destruction of Judah according to God’s will. 예레미야는 당시 백성들이 의지하던 안전의 기초를 흔들어야 했다. Jeremiah had to shake the very foundations of safety that the people relied on. 그것은 쉽지 않은 일이었다. That was not an easy task. 망한다는 메세지는 사람들이 듣기 싫은 소리였기 때문이다. A message of destruction was not something people wanted to hear. 하나님께서는 두려워하는 예레미야를 말씀으로 격려하신다. God encouraged the fearful Jeremiah through His word. 렘 1:7-8, “너는 아이라 말하지 말고 내가 너를 누구에게 보내든지 너는 가며 내가 네게 무엇을 명령하든지 너는 말할지니라 너는 그들 때문에 두려워하지 말라 내가 너와 함께 하여 너를 구원하리라.” Jeremiah 1:7-8, “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the LORD.
예레미야는 요시야 왕 재위 13년인 BC 626년부터 예루살렘이 멸망한 BC 586년까지 약 40년 동안 선지자로 활동한다. Jeremiah served as a prophet for about 40 years, from the 13th year of King Josiah’s reign in 626 BCE until the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BCE. 그런데 하나님은 그의 선지자로서 핵심적인 사명을 이렇게 소개하신다. But God introduces his prophetic mission in this way. 렘 1:10, “보라 내가 오늘 너를 여러 나라와 여러 왕국 위에 세워 네가 그것들을 뽑고 파괴하며 파멸하고 넘어뜨리며 건설하고 심게 하였느니라” Jeremiah 1:10, “See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.” 여러 나라와 여러 왕국 위에 감독자로 세워진 그의 사명은 ‘뽑고 파괴하며 파멸하고 넘어뜨리며 건설하고 심는 것’이었다. His mission, as one set over nations and kingdoms, was to “uproot and tear down, destroy and overthrow, build and plant.” 앞에 사용된 동사 네 개는 파멸에 관한 것이고, 뒤의 두 개는 건설에 관한 것이다. The first four verbs refer to destruction, while the latter two refer to construction. 무너져야 할 것이 무너져 내려야 건설할 수 있다. What must fall must fall before something new can be built. 잘못 심어진 삶의 모습이 무너져 내려야 비로소 하나님이 원하시는 삶을 심고 건설할 수 있는 것이다. The wrongly rooted patterns of life must collapse so that the life God desires can be planted and built. 그래서 참된 건설은 철저한 파괴 위에서 이루어진다. True construction is accomplished upon complete destruction. 잘못된 것이 무너지고, 거짓 안전감이 제거될 때 하나님의 나라가 세워질 수 있는 것이다. Only when the false is torn down and the deceptive security removed can God’s kingdom be established.
예루살렘이 무너지고 유다 백성들이 그 땅에서 뽑혀져 나가야 했던 것은 그들이 정치적으로, 경제적으로, 군사적으로 힘이 없어서가 아니었다. The fall of Jerusalem and the exile of the people of Judah did not occur because they were weak politically, economically, or militarily. 그들이 하나님과 상관 없이 살았고, 하나님이 금지하신 우상을 섬기며 살았기 때문이다. It was because they lived apart from God and worshiped idols He had forbidden. 하나님은 이렇게 말씀하셨다. God said it this way. 렘 1:16, “무리가 나를 버리고 다른 신들에게 분향하며 자기 손으로 만든 것들에 절하였은즉 내가 나의 심판을 그들에게 선고하여 그들의 모든 죄악을 징계하리라” Jeremiah 1:16, “I will pronounce my judgments on my people because of their wickedness in forsaking me, in burning incense to other gods and in worshiping what their hands have made.” 결국 남 유다 백성들은 그들의 죄악 때문에 그동안 그들의 안전의 기초가 되었던 것들이 무너져 내림을 경험한다. In the end, the people of Judah experienced the collapse of the very foundations they had relied upon, because of their sin. 국가가 무너졌고, 성전이 무너졌다. The kingdom fell, and the temple was destroyed. 안전의 기초가 무너지는 것은 고통스러운 일이다. The collapse of one’s foundation of safety is a painful experience. 그러나 안전의 기초가 무너지지 않았다면 그들은 자신들이 얼마나 하나님으로부터 멀리 떨어져 있었는지 깨닫지 못했을 것이다. But if the foundation of their security had not been destroyed, they would not have realized how far they had fallen from God. 그래서 하나님께서 나라와 개인의 안전의 기초를 흔드시는 것은 파멸을 위한 것이 아니다. Therefore, when God shakes the foundations of a nation or an individual, it is not for destruction. 파괴를 통하여 다시 건설하고 회복하기 위함이다. It is through destruction that He rebuilds and restores. 하나님의 뜻과 상관 없이 스스로 원하는 삶을 살 수 있다는 생각은 사람들이 저지를 수 있는 가장 치명적인 죄다. The belief that one can live the life they want, regardless of God’s will, is one of the most dangerous sins people can commit. 하나님은 잘못된 기초를 지지하지 않으신다. God does not support faulty foundations. 거짓 안정감에 의지하여 사는 것을 기뻐하지 않으신다. He does not delight in lives built on false security. 하나님은 그것을 뽑고 파괴하고 파멸하고 넘어뜨려서라도 새로운 하나님의 질서를 건설하고 심기 원하신다. God desires to uproot, tear down, destroy, and overthrow in order to build and plant a new divine order.
하나님은 머뭇거리는 예레미야를 설득하시기 위해 그에게 질문하신다. God asks a question to persuade the hesitant Jeremiah. 렘 1:11-12, “예레미야야 네가 무엇을 보느냐 하시매 내가 대답하되 내가 살구나무 가지를 보나이다 여호와께서 내게 이르시되 네가 잘 보았도다 이는 내가 내 말을 지켜 그대로 이루려 함이라 하시니라” Jeremiah 1:11–12, “The word of the Lord came to me: ‘What do you see, Jeremiah?’ ‘I see the branch of an almond tree,’ I replied. The Lord said to me, ‘You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.’” 살구나무는 히브리어로 ‘샤케드(שָׁקֵד)’다. The almond tree is called shaqed (שָׁקֵד) in Hebrew. 이 나무는 겨울이 끝나갈 무렵, 가장 먼저 꽃을 피워내는 나무다. It is the first tree to bloom as winter comes to an end. 따라서 봄이 왔음을 알리는 전령의 역할을 하는 나무다. Therefore, it serves as a herald of the coming spring. 그런데 하나님은 “내가 내 말을 지키겠다”고 말씀하셨다. But God said, “I am watching over my word to fulfill it.” 히브리어로 “지키다”는 ‘샤카드’인데, 이는 ‘지켜보다, 경계하다, 잠을 자지 않고 망을 보다’란 뜻이다. The Hebrew word “shaqad” (שָׁקַד) means to watch, to be alert, to stay awake and guard. 그러므로 하나님은 이렇게 말씀하신 것이다: “네가 샤케드 (살구나무)를 보았구나. 그래 나는 지금 쇼케드하고 있다. 내 말을 이루려고 깨어서 지켜보고 있단다.” So God was saying: “You saw the shaqed (almond tree). Yes, I am shoqed—I am watching, staying awake, to fulfill My word.” 하나님은 지금 예레미야를 통해 유다와 열방을 뽑고, 파괴하며, 파멸하고, 넘어뜨리며, 건설하고, 심기 위한 때를 지켜보고 있다고 말씀하시는 것이다. God is telling Jeremiah that He is attentively watching for the time to uproot, tear down, destroy, overthrow, build, and plant through him over Judah and the nations.
하나님은 이렇게 예레미야에게 확신을 주며 이제 행동할 것을 명하신다. God thus gives Jeremiah confidence and now commands him to act. 렘 1:17-19, “그러므로 너는 네 허리를 동이고 일어나 내가 네게 명령한 바를 다 그들에게 말하라 그들 때문에 두려워하지 말라 네가 그들 앞에서 두려움을 당하지 않게 하리라 보라 내가 오늘 너를 그 온 땅과 유다 왕들과 그 지도자들과 그 제사장들과 그 땅 백성 앞에 견고한 성읍, 쇠기둥, 놋성벽이 되게 하였은즉 그들이 너를 치나 너를 이기지 못하리니 이는 내가 너와 함께 하여 너를 구원할 것임이니라” Jeremiah 1:17–19, “Get yourself ready! Stand up and say to them whatever I command you. Do not be terrified by them, or I will terrify you before them. Today I have made you a fortified city, an iron pillar and a bronze wall to stand against the whole land—against the kings of Judah, its officials, its priests and the people of the land. They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord. 예레미야는 결코 눈물만 흘리는 나약한 선지자가 아니었다. Jeremiah was not merely a weeping, fragile prophet. 그는 실제로 유다 왕들과 열방의 백성들 앞에서 견고한 성읍, 쇠기둥, 놋성벽과 같은 존재로 살았다. He truly lived like a fortified city, an iron pillar, and a bronze wall before the kings of Judah and the nations. 아주 강하고 다수의 의견에 타협하지 않는 사람이었다. He was strong and uncompromising in the face of the majority’s opinion. 그가 자신을 미워하고 적대적인 환경가운데서도 끝까지 사명을 감당할 수 있었던 것은 ‘내가 너와 함께 하겠다’는 하나님 말씀 때문이었다. He was able to carry out his mission to the end, even in a hostile and hateful environment, because of God’s promise: “I will be with you.”
로마에 갔을 때 로마제국 전역으로 뻗어 있던 아피아 가도를 걸었던 적이 있다. When I went to Rome, I walked along the Appian Way, which stretched across the entire Roman Empire. 로마는 자신들의 힘으로 길을 만들었고, 힘의 지배를 통한 평화의 시대, 팍스 로마나 시대를 열었다. Rome built its roads by the strength of its own power and established an era of peace through domination—the Pax Romana. 콘스탄틴 황제가 313년 기독교를 공인하면서 기독교는 로마 제국의 종교가 되었다. When Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity in 313, it became the religion of the Roman Empire. 기독교를 공인한 것은 순전히 정치적인 이유 때문이었다. The legalization of Christianity was driven purely by political motives. 하나의 제국, 하나의 법, 하나의 시민, 하나의 종교라는 그의 통치 이념에 부합했기 때문이었다. It fit his governing ideal: one empire, one law, one citizen, one religion. 그러나 공인 이후 기독교는 안전한 종교가 되었다. But after its legalization, Christianity became a safe religion. 제국의 종교가 되었기 때문에 출세를 위해 기독교로 개종하는 사람들이 많아졌다. As it became the religion of the empire, many people converted to Christianity for the sake of advancement. 순교를 각오한 신자들이 모이던 교회에 정치적 야심을 가진 이교도들이 몰려 들기 시작했다. Churches once filled with believers ready to face martyrdom began to be flooded with pagans driven by political ambition. 초대 교부인 제롬은 이렇게 말했다. The early Church Father Jerome once said this. “(예배당) 지붕은 금으로 치장하고 대리석을 끼워 장식하고 있다. 한때는 불꽃 속에 던져졌던 그리스도인들의 거룩한 책이 이제는 화려하게 제본되고 황금과 보석으로 꾸며지고 있다.” “The roofs of churches are covered in gold and decorated with marble. The holy books of Christians once thrown into flames are now bound in gold and jewels.” 이러한 교회의 타락과 함께 영원할 것 같았던 로마 제국도 결국은 멸망했다. As the Church fell into corruption, the Roman Empire, which once seemed eternal, also eventually collapsed.
힘이 있던 교회, 강력했던 하나의 제국이 멸망하는 이유가 뭘까? Why do powerful churches and mighty empires fall? 그것은 겉으로 보기에 군사력이 쇠퇴하고, 더 강력한 나라가 일어났기 때문인 것으로 보인다. On the surface, it may seem to be the result of military decline or the rise of a stronger nation. 그러나 한 나라, 한 개인, 하나의 교회와 제국이 뽑히고 다시 심어지는 것은 하나님의 작정에 달려 있다. But the uprooting and replanting of a nation, an individual, a church, or an empire depends on God’s sovereign will. 하나님께서는 하나님의 백성, 하나님의 나라를 하나님의 뜻대로 세우시기 위해 그것을 뽑거나 파괴하거나 파멸하거나 넘어뜨리신다. God uproots, destroys, overthrows, and tears down to build up His people and His kingdom according to His will. 사실 역사는 힘을 가진 제국의 의도대로 진행되지 않았다. In truth, history has never moved forward according to the plans of powerful empires. 하나님의 말씀에 주목한 소수에 의해 움직여졌다. It has been shaped by the few who paid attention to God’s word. 앗수르 제국 때는 이사야를 통해서, 바벨론과 페르시아 제국 때는 다니엘을 통해서 하나님은 세상에 말씀하셨고, 그 분의 작정을 역사 속에서 진행하셨다. During the Assyrian Empire, it was through Isaiah, and during the Babylonian and Persian empires, it was through Daniel that God spoke to the world, and carried out His will in history. 제국은 늘 하나님의 뜻을 전하는 하나님의 사람들을 핍박했다. Empires have always persecuted God’s messengers. 베드로와 바울도 로마의 감옥에 갇혀야 했다. Even Peter and Paul were imprisoned in Rome. 제국은 그들을 힘으로 가두었지만 로마 제국에 하나님 나라의 길을 연 것은 바로 그들이었다. Though the empire confined them by force, it was they who opened the way for the Kingdom of God within the Roman Empire.
하나님께서는 하나님 말씀에 귀 기울이고 하나님께 예배하는 자들에게 당신의 마음을 나누신다. God shares His heart with those who listen to His word and worship Him. 그리고 그 하나님의 마음을 받은 사람들은 더이상 거짓 안전감에 의지하지 않는다. Those who receive His heart no longer rely on false securities. 하나님의 뜻을 이루기 위해 길을 떠나는 자들이 된다. They become people who set out to fulfill God’s will. 목숨을 내거는 사람들이 된다. They become those who lay down their lives. 아브라함이 그랬고, 모세가 그랬고 예레미야가 그랬다. That’s what Abraham, Moses, and Jeremiah did. 세상이 말하는 안전지대를 버리고 하나님 나라의 길을 열기 위해 길 떠나는 자들이 된 것이다. They abandoned the safety the world offered and became pathmakers for the Kingdom of God.
여러분의 안전의 기초는 어디에 있는가? Where is the foundation of your security? 여러분의 지위에 있는가? Is it in your status? 여러분이 받는 월급봉투에 있는가? Is it in your monthly paycheck? 높은 자리가 여러분의 안전을 지켜주지 않는다. A high position will not keep you safe. 올라갈수록 불안할 뿐이다. The higher you climb, the more unstable it gets. 경제력이 안전의 근거가 될 수 없다. Financial strength cannot be the basis of your safety. 불면 날아가는 것이 돈이다. Money disappears as easily as the wind. 여러분이 하나님의 말씀 앞에서 떨 수만 있다면 여러분은 이 세상에서 가장 안전한 자가 되는 것이다. If you can tremble before God’s word, you are the safest person in this world. 하나님은 당신의 말씀을 이루시는 분이기 때문이다. Because God is the one who fulfills His word. 여러분이 지금 의지하고 있는 거짓안전감은 무엇인가? What false security are you relying on right now? 하나님과 더불어 섬기고 있는 우상들은 무엇인가? What idols are you serving alongside God? 하나님은 여러분의 삶에 때로 ‘뽑고 파괴하며 파멸하고 넘어뜨리는 일’을 하신다. Sometimes, God will uproot, tear down, destroy, and overthrow parts of your life. 그것은 여러분을 벌 주기 위함이 아니라 여러분의 삶을 온전한 터 위에 다시 세우기 위함이다. It is not to punish you, but to rebuild your life on a solid foundation. 건설을 위한 파괴인 것이다. It is destruction for the sake of construction. 여러분이 스스로 안전하다고 자부하며 쌓아가는 나의 안전지대가 정말 안전한 것인지 돌아보길 원한다. I encourage you to reflect—are the safety zones you’re building truly secure? 그것이 하나님의 뜻대로 세워진 것이 아니라면 그 안전지대는 무너져야 한다. If it’s not built according to God’s will, that safety zone must fall. 그래야 우리의 삶에 하나님의 뜻이 심어지고 하나님 나라가 건설될 수 있다. Only then can God’s will be planted in our lives and His kingdom built.
하나님께서는 지금도 이 땅에서 하나님 나라를 심고 건설할 자들을 찾으신다. Even now, God is looking for people to plant and build His kingdom on earth. 그 희망은 거대한 제국의 힘을 통해 오지 않는다. That hope does not come through the power of great empires. 거대한 제국의 권력에 굴복하지 않고, 오직 하나님의 말씀이 이루어질 것을 믿는 충성된 남은 자를 통해 이루어진다. It comes through the faithful remnant who refuse to bow to empire and believe that God’s word will be fulfilled. 제국은 사라지지만, 하나님이 심으신 믿음의 사람들은 사라지지 않는다.
