“ Then came the Feast of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, [23] and Jesus was in the temple area walking in Solomon’s Colonnade. [24] The Jews gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” [25] Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me, [26] but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. [27] My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (Jn 10:22-27)

This year is the year Hanukkah and Christmas begin at the same day. So I’m going to talk about Hanukkah and Christmas.

Christmas is the day celebrating the first birthday of Jesus. Then, what did Jesus do on his last birthday? It was his final winter. He went to Jerusalem temple during the Feast of Dedication. Jewish people call it Hanukkah. It is the feast of celebrating the rededication of Zerubbabel temple. Jewish historian Josephus call it ‘the feast of light.’ Perhaps there were many candle lights celebrating Hanukkah every conner of villages.

People turn up the light when darkness prevails. People hope to live in the world the light is shining. The darkness came to Jerusalem in BC 167. The Syrian king Antiochos IV epiphanes invaded Jerusalem on Shabbat with his troops of 22,000. Jerusalem was on fire and 80,000 people in Jerusalem were killed. Antiochos IV was a Hellenism-mania. He wanted to abolish all Jewish religion, and establish Helenistic culture and religion on it. He burned up Torah scrolls, and he abolished circumcision, Sabbat and Feasts keeping. He set up the statue of Zeus, and sacrificed figs on the altar. He even let Jewish people eat the meat of figs. If they refused, he put them to death. Jewish people were shocked by what he did in the land of Israel.

The troops and officers of Antiochos IV reached to Modin. At that time, the priest was Mattadias, the Levite, and he was ordered to operate the pagan sacrifice. However, he refused to do it and killed the officer of Antiochos IV. And he destroyed all the troops of Antiochos IV with his five sons and regidents of Modin. And he escaped to the wilderness. Mattadias died in a war in BC 166. And his son Judah lead his rebel army afterward. He was famous for his nick name “Maccabi”, which means ‘hammer.’ And he finally recaptured Jerusalem in BC 164. It is said that, when he went to the Temple, there was only one bottle of oil, which chould light up only one day. However, the oil was remained during 8 days until the new oil arrived. That’s why the Jews lights up 8 candles during the Hanukkah.

The Maccabian rebolution was great. It was the act of lightening up on the history of Israel that they drived out the foreign power and rededicated the Jerusalem Temple. However, the rebolution did not continue for a long time. The leading family of the rebolution corrupted when they became a dynasty. Israel people were disappointed from this historical experience. The time of Jesus was under the Roman rule. Jewish people of that time might definitely want to have their Messiah who could light up the darkness of their situation, as they lighten the Hanukkah candles.

When Jesus was in the temple area walking in Solomon’s Colonnade, the Jews gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Here the Christ means Messiah.

They were curious whether Jesus is Messiah or not. Jesus answered to them. Jn 10:25-26, “Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me, [26] but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.”

There are two places in the Bible that Jesus is telling himself, ‘He is the Messiah.’ First of all, it is John Chapter 4. The Samaritan woman is telling to Jesus. Jn 4:25, “The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus declared, “I who speak to you am he.”

Another one is John Chapter 9. ‘네가 인자를 믿느냐’ (요 9:35) After Jesus heal the blind man from birth, He said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” Here, the Son of Man is the Messiah which is described in the book of Daniel. Then the blindman reply. Jn 9:36, “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”

He said something very significant to the Parishees and the scribes. Jn 9:39, Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” At that time of Jesus, the Parishees and the scribes were the people group who consider themselves as the light of Judaism. However, Jesus consider them as people who can not see.

Jesus is telling them in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

The writers of the Gospel recorded that Jesus came as the light. In Matthew 4:16, it is said, “the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”

In John 1:9-11, it is said, “The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. [10] He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. [11] He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.”

Why some people can not see the light even though the light had come. Especially, why His own Jewish people did not receive Jesus? The simple reason is that Jesus did not fit the qualification as their Messiah. Jewish people want to have their Messiah like the king David, who had military and political power. They wanted to have their Messiah who could liberate from the Roman rule and recover the Davidic throne in Jerusalem.

The purpose of the coming of Jesus is only one. He came to the earth in order to save all humankind as well as people of Israel. Matthew 1:21, “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Jesus came to save us from our sin. Humans can not save themselves. The innovation of technology and advances in science and knowledge can not save man. Expectations for humans often end with deeper darkness. The message of Christmas to this world is that the light shines on those who live in deep darkness. Jesus came to the earth to save us from the darkness of sin.

The apostle Peter says. 1 Peter 2:24-25, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. [25] For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”

Peter cited this passage from the book of Isaiah. Isaiah 53:5-6, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. [6] We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”

Now Jewish people does not teach this chapter of Isaiah in the synagogue. It is omitted in Torah portion, too. It is the forbidden chapter. They even can not imagine a suffering Messiah. However, Jesus fulfilled God’s will by going to the cross and taking the suffering according to the Old Testament prophecy. As He received the punishment of sin on our behalf, we have become forgiven.

At the time of Jesus there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. After forty days, Mary and Joseph went to Jerusalem for the purification ceremony of the baby. At that time Simeon took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying.

Luke 2:29-32, “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace. [30] For my eyes have seen your salvation, [31] which you have prepared in the sight of all people, [32] a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.” Simeon saw the light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to Israel people.

God called Abraham so that all the tribes of the earth would receive God’s blessing through him and his descendants. I heard that the Israeli government has decided to accept Syrian refugees. I pray that Israel will continue to be used as a nation that reveals the glory of God. And I pray that in accordance with the promises of the Old Testament, they will see the Messiah who already came to the earth as the light of the world.

John 1:11-13, “He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. [12] Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—[13] children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”

God has promised those who accept Jesus the power to become the children of God. We see the glory of God through Jesus. I bless all of you in the name of Yeshua that we all will be able to see the glory of God through Jesus who came in the light of this Christmas season. Amen!
